Welcome to the January 2010 edition of the Square D® PowerLogic® Wire, an e-newsletter from Schneider Electric offering helpful news and tips about the latest in power and energy monitoring applications and systems
Editorial PowerLogic System as Commercial Building Green Monitoring Solution Schneider Electric demonstrated and leveraged its own energy engineers to move through each step in a solar project. These energy engineers first completed an environmental analysis study to determine solar intensity/geography, emissions and best renewable resource to be used in order to determine best location for Schneider Electric to invest in renewable energy. In tandem with the environmental analysis, an economic analysis was performed taking into account regulatory requirements, tax credits and energy efficiency. Together these two studies provided the facts to determine the best return on investment and the location/type of renewable energy to use.
The Palatine headquarters ultimately was selected as the ideal location for Schneider Electric to install a solar photovoltaic system. Our Schneider Electric energy engineers handled the system design, integration and overall project management including startup and commissioning and performance validation.
In addition to using its own engineering, Schneider Electric also used its own Xantrex solar inverter, Square D® PowerLogic® SCADA software, and PowerLogic® metering for integrated green monitoring system that is used by facility engineers and its employees through energy kiosk located in the headquarters cafeteria. Please see Control Engineering's article entitled "Photovoltaic solar arrays generate excitement at Schneider Electric's Palatine headquarters" PowerLogicData Centersolutions maximize the reliability and energy performance of data centers Power availability and reliability are critical to data center operations. A disruption or unplanned downtime can seriously impact profitability and competitiveness. Additionally, customer demands for increased computing power expands load density and cooling requirements, resulting in higher energy needs, power consumption and operational costs.
Our Square D® PowerLogic® systems allow you to improve electrical network stability and drive down energy costs without compromising power availability or reliability.

More states adopt new standards for energy efficiency Additional states have adopted the 2009 I-Codes for energy efficiency from the International Code Council.
Source: International Code Council -- Consulting-Specifying Engineer, 1/19/2010 10:56:31 AM The California Building Standards Commission voted this month to adopt the 2009 International Building, Existing Building, Fire, and Residential codes statewide, effective Jan. 1, 2011. The International Residential Code adoption is a first for the state of California. Additionally, the state of California adopted the first-in-the-nation mandatory Green Building Standards Code. The California action adds to the growing list of 2009 I-Code adoptions at the state and local levels; recent adoptions include Penn., N.J., and N.H. The Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Codes were updated to the 2009 versions of the International Building, Existing Building, Residential, Fire, Energy Conservation, Plumbing, Mechanical, Fuel Gas, Performance and Wildland-Urban Interface codes. The new codes went into effect on Dec. 31. Click here to read full article . . .
The Advantage of Performance Contracting - White Paper by Shan Bates
Performance contracting is a funding method of using guaranteed energy savings to implement facility improvements, equipment upgrades and energy-efficiency techniques.
Municipal and state governments cope with tight budgets and pressure from citizens to keep taxes low. Schools, colleges and universities confront expanding enrollment and demands to improve academics. In each situation, facility managers and owners are often forced to defer maintenance and equipment upgrades in order to control costs. Performance contracting is an alternative project delivery method available to alleviate additional costs and help fi nance a project. Click here to download the White Paper...
Smart Grid Metering and Demand Response Solutions Whether you generate, transmit, distribute or consume electricity, today's energy market is more complex than ever. With increasing demand and a scarcity of new supply resources, the need to maintain power availability and manage energy cost has taken on added importance.
Schneider Electric is proud to provide a comprehensive set of solutions to allow energy providers and energy consumers to meet the challenges of building the new Smart Grid.
