Improving Power Availability and Energy Efficiency As the hot summer months approach, business and residential demand for electricity increases. Unlike virtually all other commodities, electricity can only be produced and delivered in real-time and energy providers must either accept the possibility of a service interruption in times of high demand, or overspend on generation and transmission infrastructure to ensure that capacity is always available at peak times. Both choices come at a price, but advances in energy technology are providing innovative ways to help enable a true market economy - one where energy consumers can influence the availability and the cost of power. At times of peak demand, end users can and have reduced their power costs, often releasing energy back to the grid at a profit. Others have used their system to survive power shortages and define their energy savings strategies.
